The
pictures of cows and "high-country" above were taken on
a drive over a single-lane road from the headwaters of the Ruby
River to Dillon, Montana. The road is almost 40 miles, of which
at least 30 miles are away from any paved road, habitation, electricity,
etc. We saw some free range cattle, a few hawks and not much else.
Miles and miles of rolling plains, leading to the mountains. It
was easy to imagine this country 200 years ago, when Lewis and Clark
passed through. Nothing but buffalo and elk and antelope.
Poindexter
Slough is a spring creek in the town of Dillon. Like most towns
have a town park, Dillon has a spring creek. What a town! We fished
it the last night we were there. Crystal clear water, complex currents,
lots of vegetaion in and around the water. Quite a few insects were
on the water, and when the sun went down around 8:45pm the fish
began to rise in earnest. I (Gerry) caught 3 or 4 and missed another
3 or 4, all browns. I had to go down to size 22 emergers on 6x fluorocarbon
to get any takers. We should have gone here every night after dinner.
